Songkran 2019 — Thai New Year Water Festival in Phuket: April 13—15

Songkran Traditions

Songkran has a different meaning for tourists and local people. For locals, it is the time to stay together with family, visit relatives, give alms to the monks, go to the temple to pay respect to Buddha and this way to get a blessing for the coming year. One more ritual for the festival is cleaning the house and throwing old things away. It symbolizes inner cleanup and means that all bad things are left in the past.
The season change is always long-awaited because after the rainy season starts all trees and plants come to life again and the weather gets a little fresh. Rainy season is good for harvest, especially for rice cultivation.

Water Festival

Thai culture has many rituals and following them you can get deeper into their culture. The tradition of swilling and talc or white clay unction during Songkran festival comes from rituals held in temples. Swilling symbolizes cleanup, unction symbolizes protection against something bad. During Songkran there is music playing on the streets, locals put buckets full of cold water outside and water festival starts. People passing or driving by getting their portion of cold water. Drivers buy water guns and put buckets with water in the cars. If you plan to walk these days be ready to get wet through. It is believed that you need to be swilled from head to toe for your mind to clean up. Songkran atmosphere is unforgettable, everyone behaves like a kid and just happily has fun.

Going to Songkran festival put your things into waterproof bags or better leave them at home. Also sun-protective cream will be helpful. Put on appropriate clothes – even though you know you will get wet, going to the festival shirtless or wearing a swimsuit is a disrespect. What is more, remember – safety first. Whether you walk or drive – be careful.Planning vacation for the period of Songkran remember – a better choice for you will be a more quiet place because children may be scared of crowds of people having fun and water swilling everywhere.
